On Dr. Oz: Miracles to Save Your Dry, Itchy Skin

Tired of dealing with dry, itchy skin? Rosemarie Ingleton, MD, a dermatologist, says the foods you eat, including fatty fish and breakfast cereals, along with a few must-have miracle moisturizers, can help you get rid of dry, itchy skin for good.

Foods that restore moisture

Dry skin is caused by a lack of moisture, which you can restore by eating certain foods like salmon and bran flakes, says Ingleton. Salmon is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which help the body retain moisture and soften dry skin. Bran flakes have lots of zinc, which repairs damaged skin and protects it.

Gadgets for dry, itchy skin
Technology can also relieve dry skin. Use a portable humidifier (which turns any water bottle into your own personal skin repair station) to increase humidity and moisturize your skin.

Long, hot showers irritate dry skin—so use a timer to keep track of how long you’ve been under the water. Try to keep it to 5 to 7 minutes, tops.

Over-the-counter products for dry, itchy skin
Look for over-the-counter body washes that are enriched with natural omega oils and are free of fragrances and preservatives. And research shows oatmeal-based moisturizing creams really work and can soften your scaliest skin. Dr. Ingleton recommends Skin Calming Dry Skin Body Wash and Skin Calming Daily Moisturizing Crème from Eucerin.
