On Dr. Oz: 5-Minute Microwavable Power Breakfasts

Don’t have time to make breakfast in the morning? According to Dr. Oz, all you need is five minutes and a microwave to cook up a power breakfast that will help you lose weight.

Skipping breakfast is a recipe for weight gain. “If you don’t eat right when you wake up, your body senses a famine is coming and slows your metabolism to compensate,” says Dr. Oz. “Then, when your body is presented with food later, it’s ravenous and wants to pack it in, leading to bingeing.” Instead, start your day off right with one of the three quick and healthy power breakfasts that Amy Hanten, “The Cooking Mom,” shared with Dr. Oz.

Boost your immunity with Mediterranean breakfast pizza

INGREDIENTS:

1 whole wheat pita

1 tablespoon low-fat cream cheese

1 teaspoon garlic

½ cup baby spinach

3 thin slices tomato

1 egg

Spread one side of a whole wheat pita with low-fat cream cheese.  Add antioxidant-rich spinach. Then pile on the tomato slices, which are high in vitamin C, and add garlic. Crack an egg into the center of your pizza and microwave on high for 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Dr. Oz recommends using the whole egg because the yolk contains zinc and selenium, which are important immunity-boosting minerals.

Boost your mood with apple pie breakfast bulgur

INGREDIENTS:

¼ cup bulgur

¾ cup apple

½ teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon vanilla

1 cup water

2 tablespoons Greek yogurt

1 tablespoon walnuts

Skip the oatmeal and try bulgur, which has twice the fiber. Mix all your ingredients together in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave on high for 3 minutes. Finish off your dish with Greek yogurt and walnuts.  According to Dr. Oz, what’s great about bulgur is that is slows the absorption of sugar and helps prevent mood swings.

Burn fat with this slimming southwest omelet

INGREDIENTS:

2 eggs

1 tablespoon water

2 tablespoons black beans

2 tablespoons bell pepper

2 tablespoons low-fat cheddar cheese

1 tablespoon salsa

¼ sliced avocado

Nothing is better than eggs to power up your metabolism for the day. Beat eggs and water together in a microwave-safe plastic bag. Add beans, peppers and cheese. Seal the bag and lay it flat in the microwave. Cook for 1 minute or until the eggs are set. Carefully open the bag and slide the omelet onto a plate. Serve with salsa and avocado on top. According to Dr. Oz, the peppers and salsa in your southwest omelet contain capsaicin, a fat-burning compound that signals your brain that you’re full.

ARE MICROWAVES SAFE. I keep getting e-mails cautioning against using microwaves. Many cite a student’s science project where she watered two plants with microwaved water and regular water and the plant receiving microwaved water fared very poorly.

Is this true or is it an “urban legend”?

Two quick, easy breakfasts I like when I’m in a rush: 1 cup plain, nonfat Greek yogurt topped with 1 cup fresh or frozen berries (could be other fruit too, but I like berries because of the fiber). I also add a half scoop of protein powder and sometimes a 1/4 cup of granola or high fiber cereal for some crunch and, well, fiber. The other one is I put a cup of soy milk, a cup of berries and a full scoop of protein powder in the blender.

    These breakfasts sound eggs-alent
I am going to try the beans and eggs – but I would be concerned about
microwaving in a plastic bag. This could leach PVCs into your food

There are microwave safe plastics check for label
or use glass – safe and good for our planet.

I make this breakfast wrap. It’s quick and easy and only takes a few minutes. (With the exception of the tortilla, all measurements are approximate … I usually just throw this together.)

1 whole wheat tortilla (burrito size)
1/3 cup egg whites (I use Kirkland Real Egg)
    2 slices turkey bacon
    1/4 cup black beans
    1/2 cup baby spinach
    1/4 sliced avocado (optional)
    Salsa (optional)
Low fat mexican cheese (be sure NOT to use the taco cheese which has added sodium and flavorings)
McCormack Mexican Style Chili Powder to taste
    Fresh ground pepper to taste

Put turkey bacon slices between 2 paper towels on a heat resistant plate. Microwave according to package instructions to desired crispness.

While bacon is cooking, heat small non-stick saute or omelet pan on medium heat. Add egg whites and cook until partially set. Add spinach, beans, chili powder and ground pepper to eggs and cook until eggs are firm and spinach is wilted.

Warm tortilla in microwave and cover with damp paper towel. Heat on high for 6 seconds or until just warm to the touch. Do not overcook!

Remove paper towel from tortilla and break the bacon strips so they fit in the lower part of the tortilla. Add the egg/bean/spinach mixture and top with cheese, avocado, and salsa. Turn up bottom part of tortilla and then fold over each side, leaving one side open.

    Enjoy!

Quick morning omlettes are the way to go, but I don’t feel comfortable using the plastic bag that was suggested above… Tupperware has a new product called the Microwave Breakfast Maker that is BPA free and makes an individual omlette in just a couple of minutes or it is also awesome for a quick oatmeal breakfast!! Should work with most of the recipes that are being shared… Healthy, low in fat and quick way to start the day!!
