3 Ways to Jumpstart Spring Fitness

Getting started on anything can be challenge—especially exercise. But these Sharecare experts can get you over the hurdle. Start here:

  1. Get a professional thumbs up
NASM Elite Trainer Alicen Ronan recommends the first step you take on the path to fitness should be through the door of your doctor’s office. “Your doctor can determine whether you are healthy enough for an exercise program,” Ronan says.  Once you get the all-clear, get going!
  2. Take it slow
    Dr. Michael Roizen
tells his patients to start slowly and not overdo it. “Just go for five or ten minutes and then build on that,” Dr. Roizen says. If you overdo it, you could hurt yourself or get discouraged.
  3. Make it easy
Pick an exercise that’s easy and accessible. Many of our experts (including Dr. Roizen) recommend walking as a great exercise to start with, especially for those who are overweight. Dr. Mike Clark recommends that beginners get a simple pedometer and aim for 10,000 steps a day (the average person only gets in 1,500 to 2,000 steps a day).
