What is health? For David B. Agus, MD, health is all about prevention. In fact, in his new book “The End of Illness,” out this week, Dr. Agus makes a plea that we should stop focusing so much on curing illnesses and focus instead on preventing them. He truly believes we can live to be a 90, or even older, if we make disease prevention and healthy living our mission.
That notion resonates with us at Sharecare, because we, too, are all about prevention and living a healthy life. That’s why we’re thrilled to feature several medical video questions and answers featuring Dr. Agus.
We appreciate that Dr. Agus is a warrior who has spent the last 20 years fighting cancer—even when it keeps him up at night. ”It’s the lack of progress,” he says. “The death from heart disease from 1950 until today is down about 60 percent. Cancer is almost stable. We’re no better at treating cancer than we were five decades ago. It worries me literally every night. I have patients under my care, and I worry for them. I worry for other cancer patients across the country who contact me. We have to do better.”
We agree with Dr. Agus’s call to arms “to do better.”
How can you, as a health-seeking consumer do better? How do you think the health industry can help you focus on prevention? We’d love to hear from you.
